Abolishing the ABCC is Labor policy

After six years we are on the verge of seeing the end of The ABCC. The Labor Government has acted on its commitment at the 2007 and 2010 elections to introduce legislation to abolish the Australian Building and Construction Commission. We are on the verge of seeing this $135 million waste of money end up on the scrapheap. But we need your help to make sure that the ABCC’s draconian coercive powers are buried with it. We need to tell Labor MPs to explain why the ABCC must go and why its coercive powers have no place in Australia.

I am a resident of your electorate and I am writing to express my support for the Labor Government's decision to introduce laws to abolish the Australian Building and Construction Commission. I believe that the coercive powers of the ABCC have no place in a free society, and that any legislation to get rid of the ABCC must also end its coercive powers. The ABCC has been a $135 million failure and has done nothing to improve safety or productivity in construction. The ABCC is discriminatory as workers in no other industry face laws which erode their basic rights This year the ABCC has been forced to admit that it illegally interrogated 203 people up to November last year, despite the fact that it already possesses draconian powers to compel ordinary workers to answer questions. The ABCC was a pet policy of the Howard Government, pushed by the anti-union zealots in the Liberal Party and their supporters in the world of big business. Abolishing the ABCC is Labor policy. Labor MPs should not retain any part of this attack on workers and unions. Best wishes,
